Cantos Mayos Manchegos

Cantos Mayos Manchegos

30th of April | EL TOBOSO

In El Toboso, the women of the “Casa de la Torrecilla” Association have been walking the streets dressed in the typical traditional costume of La Mancha for more than 20 years.

There is a night-time route with stops at the crosses in the Town Hall Square or at the hermitage of Santo Cristo.

These festivities are typical in almost all regions of Spain and Portugal. They are celebrated at the beginning of May or during the whole month.

The maya or mayo is a trunk or tall pole erected in the square or public place during that month and where the boys and girls had fun with dances, songs and festivities. Sometimes young people competed to climb a tree. This celebration was later used to haunt the marriageable young women. An orchestra used to accompany the rhumblers.

He knows his popular songs, usually sung in a group, and can also be used as an opportunity to approach local girls. In some places the songs are accompanied by traditional dances or lyrics that reflect current events.
