Grand Prior Palace Complex

Grand Prior Palace Complex

ALCÁZAR DE SAN JUAN
The name of Alcázar de San Juan cannot be understood without a visit to the remains of its Arab citadel, and especially to the Torreón del Gran Prior. The Palace Complex (Torreón and Palace Chapel) and the remains of the walls (El Cubillo) give us an idea about the fortress which was first Muslim and then of the Hospitallers of San Juan.
The Muslim fortress with its mosque and interior rooms was reconquered in the 13th century. The Tower was built between 1235 and 1237 by the commander of the Order of San Juan, Frey Fernández Pérez Mosego, as we can still see in the commemorative inscription on the façade. Another façade, the one on the Plaza de Palacio, shows that in 1618 was added the floor with stone windows and topped with ribbed plaster vaults.

The ascent to the tower of the Gran Prior, by its spiral staircase, will transport us first to the 13th century, then to the history of the Knights Hospitaller through the museum it houses, and finally to a magnificent view of Alcázar. Next to it, El Cubillo forms a remnant of the old wall that surrounded the palace. And finally, the Palace Chapel is a reception centre for visitors and a place of interpretation that provides an explanation of the palace complex.
