Casa de los Mendoza | Casa de la Encomienda

Casa de la Encomienda

SOCUÉLLAMOS

In front of the church, and in the same square, the Casa de la Encomienda or Casa de los Mendoza. Birthplace and home of the Commanders of the Order of Santiago, built in 1440, the building has maintained the structure of a large manor house, typical of the area, until today, going through several extensions until its current state.

The agricultural outbuildings and the house are grouped around a central courtyard. There is still the guest room in the upper rooms, where, among many other personalities, Santa Teresa de Jesús was accommodated.
On the façade, there are two large doorways with coats of arms on the keystone of the arch, one of them belonging to Don Antonio de Mendoza, Viceroy of Mexico and Peru.
