Alfarería Tinajera Interpretation Center

Alfarería Tinajera Interpretation Center

VILLARROBLEDO
Four centuries of pottery activity have made Villarrobledo the leading centre of this centuries-old know-how and the world leader in creating clay jars, unique objects thanks to their characteristics, shape and manufacturing technique, which were once the recipient par excellence for the production and conservation of wine.
The Alfarería Tinajera Interpretation Center is located in an old pottery and jar oven that has been rehabilitated and rebuilt, faithfully following the original one. It has three exhibition spaces: El Obrador, which shows the whole process until the jar is finished; La Olla de Combustión, which keeps the vitrified walls intact, an effect produced by the high temperatures reached in this place during the firing process; and the Hornode Cocer Tinajas (jar firing kiln). Through these spaces, the visitor enjoys an immersive journey through all the phases of the jar making process: location of the muddy ground, extraction of the clay, treatment and preparation of the clay, the creation of the jar, sunning of the items, preparation of the kiln and firing process, as well as the difficult task of moving the items before they are fired to place it in the kiln and then to take it out of the kiln and transport it to its final destination: the wineries. Visitors can also discover the tools and utensils used in each process and learn about the history of this unique art, its evolution and its social and economic importance.
